AB 736 (Wicks) and SB 417 (Cabaldon)

With the Legislature out on summer recess until August 18th, we wanted to give you an update on the progress of our HousingBondCA! campaign and the two $10 billion housing bond bills: AB 736 (Wicks) and SB 417 (Cabaldon).

We are going to need your help to get these bills over the finish line—starting now, before lawmakers return next week. That’s why we’re asking you to contact your State Senators today to ask them to support the housing bond.

Right now, both bills are pending referral in the Senate Rules Committee. The Legislature can take up the bills at any time when they return and vote to put them on next year’s ballot.

While timing decisions rest with legislative leadership, HousingBondCA! remains committed to urging the Legislature to advance a housing bond measure this year to send a signal to voters that the state is prepared to do what’s needed to take on the housing crisis.

California has more than 40,000 shovel-ready affordable housing units in communities all over the state waiting only on funding to move into construction. If California is serious about addressing housing affordability, now is the time for a housing bond that provides the funding needed to stabilize existing affordable housing, move the housing construction pipeline forward, and grow our supply of affordable homes.

Both AB 736 (Wicks) and SB 417 (Cabaldon) contain over half a billion dollars specifically for Tribal and farmworker housing, as well as funding available for rural communities and low-income homeownership. If passed by the legislature and voters, the housing bond will provide a significant boost to developments all over the state for years to come.

Before legislators return from recess, we urge YOU to take action by calling key State Senators to highlight the importance of passing the housing bond this year.

The advocacy toolkit has everything you need:

  • Sample phone call script
  • Key facts about the bond bills
  • Legislator contact information

Join us in calling on state leaders to pass the housing bond! Together, we can get this done.
